May-cember Thoughts
May has hit our home like a whirlwind. If it isn’t t-ball practices, it’s new orders for my small business. If it isn’t another church event, it’s a student’s graduation party. And if we are not careful, we will definitely lose focus as we enter a busy summer season.
As a small family unit, we are less experienced in the early summer shuffle than most, but we take heart by finding moments to connect in the overwhelm.

The other night Owen found the cd for 2024’s VBS, Breaker Rock Beach. We put it on, then he and I danced around the living room. He challenged me to follow his moves. I took a breath and tried. There is relief in letting my guard down to dance around the room with my son.
On other occasions, Owen has challenged his daddy to solve math problems on his chalk board. John challenges Owen right back, and the two keep on until they grow tired of the practice.
Our son loves to be read to. He loves to play games. He loves cars and baseball and stuffed animals. But something we make a point to do is pray together before falling asleep. I ask if he wants to pray or if he wants me to pray. He chooses. And we pray.
There is beauty in hearing the voice of a child call out to Father God on behalf of his friends, family, and dog. I know he learned this skill from us, his Sunday school teachers, and his pre-k teachers this year. He starts with, “Father God…” then proceeds to talk as if he’ll take all night. Owen has no pretense with God. He has no qualms about talking with Him about anything.

But maybe that’s all I needed to hear today. To be reminded that God also has no pretense when it comes to us. God has no qualms about opening His arms to us when we call on Him. God welcomes our goofy dances and math problems. God delights in how we think and take in the world. God takes heart when we choose to connect in our overwhelm.
Maybe you could use this reminder as much as me: make a point to connect with God in your overwhelm today. It may not change the circumstance, but it will do wonders for your perspective. As much as I am distracted by the everyday things, I’m certain Owen knows that Mommy and Daddy care and want to be with him. That is how God feels about you. He longs to connect, friend. Connect with Him today.

Leah, thank you for these words. The reminder is taken – God is there in my overwhelming moments and He is loving me well.
